THOU SHALT NOT GO UP AND DOWN AS A TALEBEARER AMONG THY PEOPLE: NEITHER STAND AGAINST THE BLOOD OF THY NEIGHBOUR; I AM THE LORD (LEVITICUS 19:16)

The Lord wants us not to go up and down as a dispenser of gossip and scandal among the people. Things that go in one ear and come out of the other do not hurt as much as the things that go in one ear get all mixed up and then slip out of the mouth. The difference between news and gossip lies in whether you raise your voice or lower it. The difference between gossip and a concerned friend is like the difference between a butcher and a surgeon. Both cut the flesh, but for different reasons. The tale-bearing emits a threefold poison: for it injures the teller, the hearer and the person concerning whom the tale is told.

“For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly working not at all, but are busy bodies “ (II Thessalonians 3:11) A woman repeated a bit of gossip about a neighbor and within a short period of time, the whole town knew the story. The person it concerned was hurt deeply and was unhappy. Then one day the lady who gossiped went to a wise old sage to find out what she could do to repair the damage. After listening to her problem, he said, “Go to the market place, purchase a fowl and have it killed, then on your way home pluck its feathers one by one and drop them along the path”. The woman did as she was told. The next day she was asked to collect all those feathers and bring them back to the old man. Since the wind had blown all the feathers away, she returned with only two three in her hand. The old man said “It is easy to drop them but it is impossible to bring them all back. So it is with gossip. It does not take much to spread a false rumour or gossip but you can never completely undo the wrong”

Gossip is like a scraper machine which moves a lot of dirt and moves fast. When you hear an evil report about anyone, halve it and quarter it and then say nothing about the rest. Women are fond of gossiping without knowing gossip has no respect for justice and no mercy for defenseless humanity. It runs without killing and tear down homes, break hearts and wreck lives. It made the way where greed, mistrust and dishonor are unknown. Its victims are numerous as the sands of the sea and often as innocent – It never forgives and seldom forgets.

A lady once made a complaint to Frederick the Greek king of Russia, “Your Majesty, she said, my husband treats me badly. “That is not my business,” replied the king. “But he speaks ill of you”, she said, “Then replied the king, “It is none of your business”. If you have an attitude of forgiving and forgetting any evil, you would not gossip.
