“WHO THROUGH FAITH SUBDUED KINGDOMS, WROUGHT RIGHTEOUSNESS, OBTAINED PROMISES, STOPPED THE MOUTHS OF LIONS” (HEBREWS 11:33).

Deborah was a woman, a fearless patriot and a dauntless patriarch. Deborah means, “Bee.” She gathered honey for her friends and like a bee she had a fatal sting for her enemies. God raised Deborah and endowed her with a remarkable personality and varied gifts for the deliverance of His distressed and defeated people.

  1. DEBORAH, THE MOTHER: “In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travelers walked through byways. The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel”(Judges 5:6,7). Deborah was the maternal figure. The source of this spiritual motherhood was her piety. Deborah confesses that she is a mother in Israel. She was God’s choice. She arose as a mother in Israel when her Nation had denied God. Are you willing to rise up as a mother and bear the burdens of the people? Be a support to your family, ministry and society. God shall make you a source of comfort to the down- trodden people of your society.
  2. DEBORAH, THE INITIATOR : “And she said, I will surely go with the: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh” (Judges 4:9). The initiator in God’s service was Deborah. In the hill country of Ephraim, she was a judge and people came to her, under the palm tree. She held court, judged the people and gave directions to their lives. She was both their national and spiritual leader. We must hold the position of an initiator in the families and ministries. We need to keep trying something new in the ministries for God’s glory. Deborah’s leadership resulted in her command to Barak. “Mobilize 10,000 men.” She prayed and worked through freedom. Start acting by initiating out things and cause things to happen in other’s lives. “Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam” (Judges 5:12).
  1. DEBORAH, THE MOTIVATOR: “Then Deborah said unto Barak, up; for this is the day in which the Lord hath delivered Siserah into thine hand: Is not the Lord gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men” (Judges 4:14). Deborah executed leadership by inspiring or motivating others. She derived her motivation from the God of Israel. She never doubted about God’s deliverance. We find that Deborah went up with Barak to encourage him. They functioned as one unit. God revealed his will through her. She told Barak, ‘Has not the Lord gone out before you’? She was a woman of enormous spiritual strength. She gave skillful guidelines for a military operation. Let us arise as mothers, initiators and motivators for our community.
