“And did not He make one? Yet had He the residue of the Spirit. And wherefore one? That He might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth” (Malachi 2:15).

Faithfulness between a couple is the pulse beat of their relationship. The distance between a spouse and God will be the distance between the spouses. Apparent disconnection between husband and wife is the result of a hidden disconnection between a spouse and God. So the level of faithfulness between spouses depends upon the level of faithfulness between each spouse and God. Faith in each other is the basis for their faithfulness. The faith of the husband focuses on the positive aspects of his wife. We can understand the meaning of a faithful couple in specific terms of Covenant Witness, Covenant Purpose and Covenant Commitment.

1. COVENANT WITNESS: “Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee….. yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest Mine” (Ezekiel 16:8). Covenant witness is a person who watches over the proceedings when it is made. God is the unparalleled witness. “And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the Blood: and these three agree in one” (1 John 5:8). God watches whether we are keeping the covenant or not. He withdraws His blessings if the covenant is not kept. God never answers prayer when there is no oneness among couples. “And this have ye ….. covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping ….. insomuch that He regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand” (Malachi 2:13). Though wives are weaker vessels, yet husbands need to honour them. God watches over the relationship between husband and wife. You should keep the covenant in words and thoughts. If you want God to accept your worship or ministry, then keep your vows with your spouse.

2. COVENANT PURPOSE: “And did not He make one? Yet had He the residue of the Spirit. And wherefore one? That He might seek a godly seed….” (Malachi 2:15). The word “Spirit” refers to the Holy Spirit. The purpose of the covenant is to make you understand that your spouse is your companion and partner. Many couples fail to understand this and do not maintain unity in their family. The result of this partnership and companionship is Godly seed. The LORD has put enmity between the seed of Satan and the seed of the woman. The seed of the woman is the seed of God. This seed is set apart for God. When you break your covenant purpose with your spouse, you become a seed for Satan and become God’s enemy. Radical unfaithfulness to your spouse in thought or deed will become your life-style. Divorce is not the solution for Godly people. Peace breakers are the seed of Satan. God is pleased when there is peace in the family.

3. COVENANT COMMITMENT:  “…..Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth” (Malachi 2:15).“Take heed to your spirit” refers to the covenant commitment. Spirit here refers to the nature within you. This is a warning that the enemy is all out against the couples from staying faithful to each other. The LORD had made both husband and wife as one flesh. “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). They should not become two.  Both husband and wife are inseparable partners even till eternity. Hence they should be faithful to each other. “….. (Wives) ….. being heirs together of the grace of life…..” (1 Peter 3:7). It is the Holy Spirit of God who helps them to be one flesh. He does the ministry of reconciliation between them and grants them the wisdom to stay united and resist the enemy who causes division.
