“Neither give place to the devil” (Ephesians 4:27).

Christ should be the centre of every family. The Word of God should be the guide book in every decision that the husband and wife take. Every couple should bend their knees and invite the LORD in their midst. The enemy tries to step in between them and separate them from the LORD first, and then separate them from each other. The Bible clearly exhorts us not to give room to the devil. Only when a couple understand this, they can be vigilant to safe guard their relationship with the LORD and with each other. The first couple, Adam and Eve, is a real warning to us, for they gave room to the devil. When the adversary came in between them, they faced severe loss. Adam and Eve who were created in the image and likeness of God, lost the glory of God and the nature of God. Adam who appreciated Eve before eating the fruit, accused her to God after they sinned. They destroyed their own blessed privileges and also brought curse upon their generations. How to avoid the adversary from coming into our family?

Start the day with the LORD. Adam and Eve had a sweet fellowship with the LORD. The LORD used to visit them in the cool of the day and fellowshipped with them. Let our eyes be opened to how much our LORD wants to fellowship with our family. The enemy is against the sweet fellowship that we have with God. Just as how he barged in between Adam and Eve in their sweet relationship with God, he tries his level best to thwart our family altar. Let us have the same desire to commune with the LORD just as He desires to commune with us. The best way to put a barricade to the enemy is by starting the day with the LORD. Family altar is as important as individual prayer. Every couple should be extra vigilant about what happens at home just before the family altar. Once he succeeds in creating a rift between husband and wife who don’t pray regularly, he destroys the family peace. It is always prudent and profitable to have the family altar preferably in the morning and to bind the strong man.

Stick to what God says. The reason why Eve said that she should not even touch the fruit is that Adam had added little more to what the LORD had advised. The LORD told Adam not to eat the fruit. He did not tell them not to touch it. Adam thought that by adding to what the LORD has said, he would protect his wife from eating it. Many husbands try to draw a boundary wall outside the boundary that the LORD has drawn. This created a room for the enemy to enter in and destroy the first family on planet Earth. Nothing happened to Eve when she touched the forbidden fruit, because the LORD did not tell them not to touch it. He only told them not to eat it. It is dangerous to add or subtract anything to what the LORD has given in His Holy Writ. Many husbands pave a way to the spiritual fall of the family by adding something to what the LORD has not said. ‘Do what the LORD says,’ is the simple key to avoid the enemy.

Suspicion is the doorway to the enemy. The reason why Adam had told Eve not to touch the forbidden fruit was that he did not have a complete trust on his wife. A Godly husband must trust his wife. “The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil” (Proverbs 31:11). Mutual trust is the solid foundation that a healthy family can be built upon. Where there is suspicion, there will be a fall. There should not be any suspicion between the husband and the wife. The enemy uses a small matter to create suspicion and separate the spouses. Sadly, Adam and Eve were not vigilant. Adam should have trusted his wife, Eve. Eve should have consulted her husband before eating the forbidden fruit. The adversary came in between them and they have become a warning to us.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil,
and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
