1385-GiveGift.220w.tn   “And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on His head” (Mark 14 : 3).

Simon had provided a feast in his house out of gratitude to the Saviour for the blessings he had received and Jesus, His disciples, Mary, Martha and Lazarus were all there. Quite suddenly, Mary moved towards the Lord. She was holding in her hands a beautiful alabaster box which contained very precious delicately perfumed ointment. She broke the box and poured the content over Jesus’ head. It signified that she was giving her very best to the Lord Jesus.

I-  WHAT CAN WE GIVE TO THE LORD ?

There are at least three gifts which all of us can bring to Him.

1. BEST OF OUR LOVE: Though the ointment was of great worthy the real gift Mary brought to Him was of her love. “He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of  Me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me” (Matthew 10 : 37 ).

2. BEST OF OUR LIFE: What a privilege it is for anyone to give to the Lord his or her whole life in all its freshness and vigour ! Is He not worthy of our best- the best of our strength, our manhood or woman hood? Let us give the best of our strength, times and gifts to Him.

3. BEST OF OUR TALENTS: Everyone has some talent. What is yours? Whatever it is, the Lord wants to use it. If you will only place it at His feet and yield it wholly to Him, He will use it in the most wonderful way.

II- WHY SHOULD WE GIVE TO THE LORD? There are two answers to this question.

(1) HE IS WORTHY: Who is He? He is the eternal Son of God, the Lord of glory and the Saviour of the world. He is worthy of the very best that we can give to Him.

(2) HE HAS GIVEN HIS BEST FOR US: He has given His all for us and has shed His precious blood upon the Cross for us in order that we might be redeemed. Mary was constrained to give her best to the Lord as He had given her the wonderful gift of forgiveness .“For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead”(2 Corinthians 5 : 14).

III. THE RESULT OF OUR BEST TO THE LORD:

(1) SOME WILL OBJECT: When Mary gave her best to the Lord, there was indignation, murmuring, criticism and misunderstanding. “Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?” (John 12 :5). Judas was very quick to speak of Mary’s act of dedication as “ waste”. This is how the world often assesses the dedication of a life wholly given to the Lord  “But when His disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?” (Matthew 26: 8).

(2) THE LORD WILL BE PLEASED: The greatest thing in the world is to have His commendation. And Jesus said,

‘Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on Me” (Mark 14 : 6).

(3) OTHERS WILL BE HELPED: What a marvellous result there was from Mary’s simple act of devotion and dedication “Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her” ( Mark 14:9). Who can estimate the far-reaching influence of one life yielded to Him? Is your life completely given over to Him?
