“AND JESUS SAID UNTO HIM, NO MAN HAVING PUT HIS HAND TO THE PLOUGH, AND LOOKING BACK, IS FIT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD” (LUKE 9:62)

What a tragedy when a soul turns back, for Jesus said that they are not fit for the kingdom of God. Backsliders return to their old ways and their old companions. They may go back to all that the world can offer and try to still the inward voice that calls them back to the best of life. But they can never quite silence their conscience once they have known what it is to be wise and to do good! Why do people who start out so well turn away from the things of God?

REASONS OF BACKSLIDING:

1. DEFECTIVE START:-

There are many people who just come to the house of God, take part in some form of Christian service but in fact  they are not born again. They have a form of godliness but no inward reality. There are many who, when they started, confessed their allegiance to Christ but did not really set right their own lives. They have only been Christians but they did not trust Christ as their Saviour. They were Christians only in a nominal sense; such people in the course of time fall away unable to follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. NEGLECT OF FELLOWSHIP AND DEVOTION:-

Here is a reason why many lose out spiritually. They start out well in the Christian life and then flounder for the simple reason that they do not feed upon the Word of God, do not spend time alone with the Lord regularly and do not cultivate regular attendance at the house of God. Those who neglect these means of grace are sure to break down spiritually.

3. OVERWHELMED BY ADVERSITY:-

Every Christian is persecuted for Christ’s sake and is chastened by the Lord for the purpose of sanctification. But Jesus cheers us up saying that He is with us in tribulation. The Bible also quite definitely teaches that every Christian must expect trial and testing. This is all part of God’s permissive plan in training us. But sometimes when persecution is severe, God’s people turn aside as they are not rooted and grounded in God’s Word.

4. INDULGING IN SOME KNOWN SIN:-

If a Christian harbours some known sin, then sooner or later he will grow cold, become careless and go out of fellowship with the Lord Himself. For example, if a Christian man marries a non-Christian girl, he will become worldly. Sin of disobedience always puts a barrier between him and the Lord and places him in a danger of leaving the Lord Jesus. So we need to safeguard our soul against known sins.

5. DECEIVED BY FALSE TEACHINGS:-

Everywhere Satan has his ministers, false prophets who propagate error and seek to turn aside even the elect of God. Be on your guard lest the subtle endeavour of Jehovah’s Witness, only Jesus Group and Christian Scientist turn you aside from your hope and the simplicity that is in Christ Jesus. Be strong in the doctrine of Jesus Christ.

REMEDIES:-

1. Make a full and frank confession to the Lord Himself and be assured that He will forgive, cleanse, restore and reinstate.

2. Return to the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul.

3. Trust the Lord to keep you, to succour you, to sustain you and to enable you to follow Him faithfully every day.
