“Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam” (Judges 5:12).

“ Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God” (Revelation 3:2).

Deborah was a prophetess and a maternal figure. Deborah means ‘bee’ in the sense of orderly action. As a bee she was sweet to her friends and a danger to her enemies. She was endowed with remarkable personality. She was vigilant and fulfilled her role as a Judge. Israel was under cruel oppression of the Canaanites. Deborah encouraged Barak and arose as a mother in Israel. A watchful woman must awaken herself to the following three things.

  1. AWAKEN TO DEDICATION: “The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel” (Judges 5:7). Deborah arose and dedicated herself to be a mother in Israel. It shows her excellent character and the cost of her dedication. It needed the utmost sacrifice and vigour of the soul in performance of it. She employed all the powers and faculties of the soul into it. When she took the lead, the people of Israel willingly offered themselves. She served God to the fullest extent of her ability towards the deliverance of the Israelites .We need to dedicate ourselves to the Lord and to the spiritual leaders. This is the secret of victory.
  2. AWAKEN TO REALISATION: “Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty” (Judges 5:23). Here the people of Meroz did not realize that they had to fight against the enemies. They did not help God’s people in their war against the enemies. The tribe of Reuben basely declined the service. Gilead abode to look after the business of the world. Dan and Asher lay on the sea-shore. Other tribes like Benjamin and Ephraim were awakened to realization and arose as governors. Be vigilant and sober in God’s ministry ‘LOOK AFTER GOD’S BUSINESS VIGILANTLY AND HE WILL LOOK AFTER YOURS SUCCESSFULLY.’
  3. AWAKEN TO PROCLAMATION: “Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves” (Judges 5:2).“Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel” (Judges 5:3).“Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam” (Judges 5:12). Here Deborah awakened herself to proclaim the victory and praise God for the avenging of Israel. In Isaiah 26:19, “Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew  is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.” We read that we need to awake and sing. We need to be wide awake to proclaim what the Lord has done in our lives. Our song of jubilation should include our sweet experiences with the Lord and our powerful testimony. “They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD,  even the righteous acts  toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates” (Judges 5:11).  “ And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this  is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him” (Judges 4:14).
